New Google Maps Feature To Show COVID Cases Near You
With every passing day, the number of COVID cases is also surging with no signs of relief in the coming months. This has drastically affected travelling even in the domestic parts of a city. To counter this, Google has introduced a new feature in Google Map that will give you important information about COVID cases.
The global-tech giant rolled out the new Google Maps feature which will have “a tool that shows critical information about COVID cases in an area so you can make more informed decisions about where to go and what to do.”
COVID Layer: How Will The New Google Maps Feature Work?
In a blog post, Sujoy Banerjee, Product Manager, Google Maps, has said the app will have a new Covid layer. The users will have to tap on the layers button on the top right hand corner of the screen and click on the “covid-19 info”. This will show a seven-day average of the new coronavirus cases per 100,000 people in the area you are looking at. A label will also show if the COVID trend is rising or falling in the specific area.
In addition to this, Google Maps will also allow you to distinguish the density of new cases using colour coding feature. As per reports, the data will be visible for all the 220 countries and territories where Google Map is available.
“Trending case data is visible at the country level for all 220 countries and territories that Google Maps supports, along with state or province, county, and city-level data where available.” read the Google blog post.
As far as data procurement is concerned, the app will use multiple authoritative sources such as Johns Hopkins, the New York Times, and Wikipedia as they get their data from public health organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and, government health ministries among others.
Other COVID-19 Updates
This is not the first time that Google has launched a new feature to help users during the pandemic. Earlier, the company also rolled out other features such as popular times and live busyness, COVID checkpoints in driving navigation and COVID-19 alerts in the transit. These features were aimed at helping users find essential information to stay safe during the coronavirus outbreak.
Coming back to the new Google Maps feature, it will be available for both Android and iOS from this week as per the reports.
